Tonality analysis with complementary intervals (ci)

The tonal orientation in harmonic processes can be determined much more precisely by looking at the complementary intervals contained in the chords than with the means of traditional, triad-based functional theory. The term “ci-analysis”, derived from the abbreviation for “complementary interval”, does not conflict with the functional analysis, since the tonal relevance of a triad depends on the ci contained in it. Ci-analysis already provides additional information with regard to the core area of classical harmony. This information deepens and consistently justifies the understanding of a concrete harmonic progression. In the increasingly individualized compositions of the 19th century, ci-analysis enables precise results even where traditional methods reach limits. And it offers exclusive statements on Arnold Schönberg’s tonal strategy, which previously was without analytical approach.

A detailed explanation of ci-analysis can be found in the Theorie der Tonalität /Theory of Tonality published in 2013. We have summarized the most important basics of the theory in a guide. Tutorials built on one another provide an introduction to the analysis of compositions from different eras and provide instructions for working with the ciAnalysis app. Exemplary analyses provide an opportunity to deal with the importance of the ci-analysis for interpretation. A glossary focused on the topic provides an overview of the most important terms.

Identifying and assigning ci is time-consuming and error-prone. Thanks to the development of the ciAnalysis app, this process has been largely automated and accelerated. This allows the analysis of expanded compositions with a reasonable amount of time. The app facilitates an access to the tonal enigma of romanticism, impressionism and Arnold Schönberg’s dodecaphony, even to musicians and musicologists without special theoretical knowledge. A specific app tutorial explains the individual steps.

The Ci-Analysis page bundles and simplifies access to a still young and innovative method of tonality analysis. It integrates the rules of traditional harmony and at the same time attempts to overcome their limitations by the recourse to a fundamental law.
