Benedikt Stegemann was born in 1963. During his youth literature and foreign languages (French, English, Latin, Greek) competed with a passion for music. Piano studies at the Musikhochschule in Cologne (class of Wilhelm Neuhaus) were followed by studies in musicology, philosophy and literature at the universities of Marburg/Lahn and Karlsruhe. His thesis on Arnold Schönberg, submitted to Wilhelm Seidel at the University of Leipzig, led to the discovery of the symmetries K and S. During an intensive exchange with Guerino Mazzola, insight into the fundamental importance of these symmetries for the tonal organization in the twelve-tone space developed. Stegemann’s Theory of Tonality, published in 2013, opens a new chapter in tonality analysis based on the symmetry K.
